RI awaits China's report on Tansil<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia is waiting for China to respond to a
\nrequest to verify the whereabouts of Eddy Tansil, an escaped
\nconvict who reportedly owns a brewery in the country.<\/p>\n
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas said he had sent a
\nletter to the government of the People's Republic of China but
\nhad yet to receive a response.<\/p>\n
He was speaking after appointing Adian Silalahi as chief of
\nthe ministry's research and development center, replacing Johan
\nSyahperi.<\/p>\n
Pending an official response from China, Alatas said that his
\noffice was still trying to verify reports that Tansil, the former
\nchief of the Golden Key business group, owns a brewery in the
\nChinese province of Fujian.<\/p>\n
Alatas said he sent the letter to China immediately after
\nreports of the convicts whereabouts first surfaced.<\/p>\n
\"We will have to send people (to Fujian) and ask for help from
\nlocal authorities,\" Alatas said. \"So far China has been
\ncooperative.\"<\/p>\n
A request for Tansil's extradition would be submitted if the
\nreports were verified, he said.<\/p>\n
The Movement of Concerned Citizens on State Assets (Gempita),
\na private corruption watchdog, said on Dec. 28 that Tansil was
\ncurrently running a brewery under a licensing agreement with
\nGermany's Beck's Beer Co. in the city of Putian, in Fujian.<\/p>\n
Tansil, 42, was serving the second year of a 17-year sentence
\nfor corruption and violation of banking laws when he escaped from
\nprison.<\/p>\n
He was found guilty of taking more than US$430 million from
\nthe state Bapindo bank for the construction of several chemical
\nfactories under his Golden Key Group in a credit scam run between
\n1989 and 1990.<\/p>\n
Prabowo<\/p>\n
At the same function, Alatas also said his office was still
\nwaiting for official confirmation of reports that Jordan had
\nconferred honorary citizenship on Prabowo Subianto, the former
\ncommander of the Army's Special Force.<\/p>\n
The Jordanian Embassy in Jakarta has said that it has no
\nrecord of granting Prabowo Jordanian citizenship. Prabowo himself
\nsent a facsimile message to the Indonesian media saying that
\nwhile he had close relations with Jordan's First Family, he had
\ndeclined to take up an offer of honorary citizenship from the
\nkingdom because Indonesia does not recognize dual citizenship.<\/p>\n
Prabowo received an honorable discharge from the military
\nafter admitting to an involvement in the abduction of a number of
\npolitical activists.<\/p>\n
Eleven members of the Army's Special Force are currently being
\ncourt-martialled for their involvement in the kidnappings. The
\nthird session of their trial is scheduled for Tuesday. (anr)<\/p>",
