RI athletes lack discipline, says KONI training head<\/p>\n

Indonesia's preparation for the 22nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games
\nseems to be stuttering as the national training chief criticized
\nthe athletes for lacking discipline.<\/p>\n
\"Some of the athletes appeared undisciplined. This can affect
\nour preparation for the SEA Games,\" Djoko Pramono, KONI official
\nin charge of the Indonesian training for the SEA Games in
\nVietnam, said.<\/p>\n
Djoko told reporters about learning of the athletes'
\ndiscouraging conduct following his inspection of the Hotel
\nCentury, the home of some of the training athletes, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will send athletes to Vietnam to compete in 23
\nsports. It is not known how many athletes are based out of the
\nHotel Century, which lies outside the Bung Karno sports compound
\nin Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Djoko, who is also a National Sports Council (KONI) chief in
\ncharge of development, said those athletes came from five
\ndisciplines : athletics, boxing, gymnastics, soccer and wushu
\n(martial arts).<\/p>\n
\"They are awake late at night, some watching TV. They hang
\naround outside the hotel for meals instead of sticking to the
\nhotel menu.<\/p>\n
\"This bad behavior must stop, otherwise they won't be able to
\noptimize their preparation. I will consult with the sports
\norganizations, because this phase of the training is their
\nresponsibility,\" Djoko said.<\/p>\n
\"Maybe, I'll ask the sports organizations to not allow their
\nathletes TV or irons in their rooms. We have to be strict with
\nthe athletes to make our mission successful in Vietnam,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Djoko recalled his success in guiding Indonesia to the top of
\nthe standings at the 1997 games, a feat he attributed to his
\nstrict handling of the athletes during the training phase.<\/p>\n
Soewardi, the training director of the boxing workout,
\nadmitted there were some misbehaving among his boxing hopefuls.<\/p>\n
\"I have dismissed five boxers because of their poor
\ndisciplinary conduct,\" he said when contacted later on the day.
\nHe failed to elaborate when the cuts took place but said it was
\nbefore June 1.<\/p>\n
He said three of the five boxers were being groomed for long-
\nterm opportunities, while two others -- Stevie Binalay and
\nAntonius Joni -- were preparing for the Vietnam games.<\/p>\n
It was the second time Binalay has been dismissed from the
\ntraining squad. He was also cut from the Indonesian boxing squad
\nbefore the 2002 Asian games.<\/p>\n
Soewardi said the Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association
\n(Pertina) was training 19 boxers, 15 of whom are staying in Hotel
\nCentury to prepare for the games.<\/p>\n
He pledged to continued strict action against misbehaving
\nboxers. \"That's for sure. Those failing to obey procedure have no
\nplace in the squad,\" he said.<\/p>",
