        "content": "<p>RI and U.S. seek input on future of relations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia-United States relations toward the<br>\n21st century was discussed in a seminar at the Indonesian<br>\nMinistry of Foreign Affairs yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the seminar was to gather input from a wide range<br>\nof individuals as a source of consideration in the implementation<br>\nof Indonesian foreign policy towards the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar was opened by the Director General of Political<br>\nAffairs Izhar Ibrahim and attended by government officials,<br>\ndiplomats, academics and businesspeople.<\/p>\n<p>The three main speakers were U.S. Ambassador to Jakarta<br>\nStapleton Roy, political observer Hasnan Habib and economist<br>\nDorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti.<\/p>\n<p>Hasnan presented a paper titled The Framework of U.S.<br>\nPolitical and Security Policy in Asia Pacific, while Dorodjatun<br>\nspoke on the prospect of economic, trade and investment relations<br>\nbetween the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar was organized by the foreign ministry's<br>\ndirectorate of American affairs and its research and development<br>\ndivision.<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministry said at the seminar yesterday that apart<br>\nfrom the great progress achieved since the two countries<br>\nestablished diplomatic ties 46 years ago, the two sides continue<br>\nto try and harmonize their perceptions on various political,<br>\neconomic, trade, environmental and social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from that the two countries also continuously discuss<br>\nand exchange views on human rights issues and democratization<br>\nwhich include the question of freedom of speech and the right to<br>\nassociate.<\/p>\n<p>Other topics include the establishment of international sea<br>\nlanes through Indonesia's archipelagic territory and the<br>\ninternational military and training program which are mutually<br>\nbeneficial.
