        "content": "<p>RI and PNG discuss border agreement<\/p>\n<p>NUSA DUA, Bali (JP): Officials from Indonesia and Papua New<br>\nGuinea are holding a three-day Joint Border Committee meeting in<br>\nhopes of fostering security, stability and better cooperation in<br>\nborder management.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M. opened the meeting<br>\non Monday and told the 66 participating officials that one<br>\npriority is to determine the location of a proposed border post.<\/p>\n<p>\"The border post should be completed by the end of the year<br>\n2000. However, we should also be judicious in determining where<br>\nand when the border post should be placed,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed hopes that the Joint Sub-Committee on Security<br>\ncan improve cooperation so that the two countries can deal more<br>\neffectively with \"security disturbing groups\" that have been<br>\nlaunching secessionist activities.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea, through its Minister for<br>\nProvincial and Local Level Government Affairs of Papua New<br>\nGuinea, Peter Barter, affirmed its commitment to involve greater<br>\nnumbers of traditional peoples who live along the border in<br>\nbusiness activities.<\/p>\n<p>Barter stressed that cross-border trade is vital to the<br>\neconomic development of the border region, and that Papua seeks<br>\nthe Indonesian government's cooperation to facilitate similar<br>\nendeavors.<\/p>\n<p>Last month Papua began construction of a road connecting<br>\nWutung and the border in order to facilitate border crossing.<\/p>\n<p>Papua also agreed to sign an MOU during the three-day meeting<br>\nto establish an exchange rate facility for the Kina and Rupiah<br>\nbetween the two countries' central banks.<\/p>\n<p>\"The exchange rate monetary facility is expected to deter<br>\nattempts to set up black market in currencies,\" he said.
