        "content": "<p>RI and Malaysia to build container port<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia wants to jointly develop a one-<br>\nbillion-dollar container port with Indonesia in the Batam tourist<br>\nisland off Indonesia, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed port would be able to handle up to 20 million<br>\ncontainers, general cargo and petrochemicals annually and serve<br>\nas a catalyst for the development of Batam, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Batam was linked in a three-way growth triangle with<br>\nMalaysia&apos;s southern Johore state and Singapore as part of efforts<br>\nunder the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to pool<br>\nresources for mutual benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, ASEAN comprises<br>\nBrunei, Thailand and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is a major project with good potential not only for the<br>\ntwo parties (Malaysia and Singapore) but also the growth<br>\ntriangle,&quot; Muhyiddin Yassin, chief minister of Johore, told<br>\nreporters.<\/p>\n<p>Muhyiddin said Johore state government officials would visit<br>\nBatam soon to study the economic viability of the 2.5 billion<br>\nringgit (one billion U.S. dollars) project. He did not say if<br>\nSingapore would be invited into the venture.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian Research and Technology Minister B.J. Habibie,<br>\nduring a one-day visit Tuesday to Johore, had expressed<br>\nconfidence that the proposed port would play a key role in the<br>\ndevelopment of Batam, Johore officials said.<\/p>",
