RI and Egypt should forge closer relations: Soeharto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia and Egypt should forge an even closer
\nrelationship, President Soeharto said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
In his speech accepting the credential letters of Egypt's new
\nambassador to Indonesia, Mahmoud Mohamed Osman, the President
\nsaid closer ties between the two are bound to help development in
\ntheir respective countries.<\/p>\n
Soeharto underlined the importance of the Non-Aligned Movement
\nas a vehicle through which developing countries fight for their
\ninterests.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and Egypt are both leading members of the movement.<\/p>\n
This year, during which Indonesia marked its golden
\nanniversary, Soeharto paid tribute to Egypt's role in supporting
\nIndonesia's independence struggle 50 years ago.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Osman, 57, is a career diplomat who has served in
\nPakistan, Canada and the United Nations and was Egypt's
\nambassador in Kenya in 1986 to 1990. Since then, he has held
\nvarious government positions, ranging from chief cabinet deputy
\nprime minister, director of department of policy and planning and
\ndirector of research and political information.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Osman was one of two new foreign envoys who
\npresented their letters of credentials to the President at the
\nMerdeka Palace on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The other one was Abdul Momen Choudhury of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n
To Ambassador Choudhury, President Soeharto said that
\nIndonesia and Bangladesh should strive to expand their existing
\nrelations to encompass the private business sectors of the two
\ncountries, as well as the two governments.<\/p>\n
Soeharto also expressed his gratitude for Bangladesh's strong
\nsupport during Indonesia's three-year chairmanship of the Non-
\nAligned Movement between 1992 and 1995. (emb)<\/p>",
