Revision in American dictionary needed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Attorney General Singgih has called on The
\nAmerican Heritage College Dictionary to revise its entry for
\nIndonesia in time for the next edition.<\/p>\n
Singgih told a parliamentary hearing yesterday that the
\ninformation given by the dictionary, published by the Houghton
\nMifflin Company of the United States, is incorrect.<\/p>\n
The dictionary, under the Indonesia entry, says that Indonesia
\nproclaimed its independence on Dec. 27, 1949, instead of Aug. 17
\n1945.<\/p>\n
\"We have asked the Ministry of Education and Culture to right
\nthe wrong information by asking the publisher to make the
\ncorrection in their coming edition,\" Singgih said.<\/p>\n
The government banned the distribution of the dictionary last
\nDecember after discovering the mistakes and asked the
\ndistributor, PT Etno Mitra Pustaka, to withdraw the book from
\ncirculation.<\/p>\n
The distributor had earlier told the office of the Attorney
\nGeneral that 15 out of the 52 books it distributed had been
\nwithdrawn, while the remaining 37 had been sold.<\/p>\n
According to Singgih, the American publisher had informed PT
\nEtno Mitra Pustaka that the definition and information on
\nIndonesia in the dictionary was obtained from a Dutch source.<\/p>\n
In a letter to PT Etno Mistra Pustaka, the publisher asked for
\nbetter and more detailed information about Indonesia in order to
\nmake the correction in its coming edition. (03)<\/p>",
