Revised Agrarian Law demanded<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Thousands of farmers and
\nfishermen in the province marched to the provincial council
\noffice on Monday demanding revisions to the 1960 Agrarian Law
\nwhich they described as \"unjust\".<\/p>\n
The protesters grouped in the People's Committee for Agrarian
\nRenewal (KRSPA) said the People's Consultative Assembly in
\nJakarta should issue a regulation to revise the law.<\/p>\n
\"The law has oppressed small farmers and fishermen since
\nSoeharto's period. We need protection,\" Supriansyah, the
\nprotesters spokesman, said.<\/p>\n
He cited the 26 land disputes in the province since the
\nAgrarian Law came into effect. \"The people's property in the
\nvillage of Arassoe, Cina district in Bone was arbitrarily taken
\nover by state-owned plantation company PTPN XIV. The Wirabuana
\nMilitary Command, too, has also stolen people's land in the
\nvillage of Ballewe, and the illegal takeover of villages and rice
\nfields for the construction of the controversial Bili-Bili dam,\"
\nSupriansyah recalled.<\/p>\n
He claimed that the Law seemed to legalize appropriation of
\npeople's land despite prior ownerships.<\/p>\n
None of the councillors met the farmers in the protest which
