US President Donald Trump reportedly went ahead with strikes on Iran\nin February even after a series of warnings from those closest to him.\nSenior officials had cautioned that the war could trigger a global\nenergy crisis and strengthen hardline factions in Tehran.<\/p>\n
According to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with\npre-war meetings, then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard\nwarned Trump that \u2018killing Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader could produce an even\nmore hardline successor\u2019. The report added that such a move could also\npush Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic passage through\nwhich roughly one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and gas trade flows.<\/p>\n
US Vice President JD Vance also urged a more \u2018cautious\u2019 approach that\nprioritised negotiations, arguing that a diplomatic agreement would cost\nfar less than a war that could bring \u2018uncontrollable consequences\u2019.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, senior military officials, including Defence Secretary\nPete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan\nCaine, presented Trump with a \u2018decisive\u2019 strike option. However, several\nofficials warned of ammunition constraints and risks to US forces\nalready described as \u2018overstretched\u2019.<\/p>\n
Trump was nevertheless reported to have brushed aside those concerns,\nbelieving that the military could \u2018overcome any problem\u2019 that arose.<\/p>\n
Trump reportedly displayed \u2018satisfaction when the war began\u2019. At a\nfundraiser in Mar-a-Lago, he was said to have \u2018puffed out his chest\u2019\nafter receiving news of the death of Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader at the time,\nAli Khamenei.<\/p>\n
But the situation shifted as fuel prices soared and the war did not\nproceed as expected. Leaders of Saudi Arabia and Qatar then pressed the\nWhite House to seek a diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n
Internal polling showed that nearly 80% of Americans supported a deal\nto end the war. That pressure helped push Trump to pursue a temporary\nceasefire in June.<\/p>\n
Several Republican members also warned of the political fallout from\na prolonged war on the party\u2019s chances in the November midterm\nelections. Meanwhile, the 60-day nuclear negotiation window ended on 17\nAugust without a final settlement.<\/p>\n
