Returning traffic to increase today<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The number of passengers from various provinces
\nreturning to Jakarta will intensify today and tomorrow, officers
\nof the Directorate General of Land Transportation predict.<\/p>\n
\"Current data shows that the number of returning passengers
\nwill increase today. We estimate it will peak tomorrow and
\nSunday,\" Robin P., an officer in charge of the city bus stations
\ntold The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
The directorate had not received complete data on the number
\nof passengers yesterday, Robin said, adding that estimation on
\ntoday's influx was based on existing data.<\/p>\n
The first group of about 95,000 passengers from various
\nprovinces arrived in Jakarta on Thursday, the first day after the
\nIdul Fitri holidays, he said.<\/p>\n
The directorate organized a 24-hour post for traffic control
\nduring the Idul Fitri season with those manning it representing
\nthe Land Transportation Agency, state railway company Perumka,
\nand those in charge of sea transportation.<\/p>\n
Representatives from the police department and ham radio
\norganizations such as RAPI will also supply information on
\ntraffic conditions.<\/p>\n
Officers agreed yesterday that based on information they
\nreceived, the number of passengers returning to the capital city
\nfrom various parts of the country can be expected to reach its
\npeak today and tomorrow.<\/p>\n
\"The number is expected to surge tomorrow and Sunday as
\noffices will be doing business on Monday,\" Saleh Puradirja of
\nPerumka said.<\/p>\n
He said data showed that about 65,000 returning passengers
\narrived at various railway stations in Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Additional buses<\/p>\n
To anticipate the influx of returning passengers today and
\ntomorrow, the state-run passenger transport companies PPD and
\nDAMRI have put on stand-by an additional 215 buses in Central
\nJava, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Some 95 PPD buses are ready to carry passengers from Tegal,
\nCentral Java, while 120 DAMRI buses from Surabaya, Semarang and
\nBandung are ready to take passengers from Central and East Java.<\/p>\n
PPD operated more than 600 buses to transport some 37,000
\npassengers to various cities in Central Java prior to the Idul
\nFitri holidays this year, the company's public relations officer,
\nKhamin Busro, said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Merpati Nusantara Airlines is adding 20 extra
\nflights from yesterday until March 3, serving flights to and from
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We will be ready to operate more flights in case there is an
\nunexpected surge in the number of returning passengers,\"
