The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has urged families travelling home by motorcycle during the annual homecoming period to prioritise child safety and wellbeing. With an estimated 12.74 million of the predicted 146.48 million returning migrants using motorcycles, the commission emphasises proper safety equipment, regular rest breaks, and adequate nutrition for children on long journeys, whilst calling on local governments to improve rest facilities and health services along homecoming routes.

The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has reminded the
public travelling home using motorcycles with children to pay attention
to safety considerations. This appeal was made given that motorcycles
remain a primary mode of transport for those returning home for the
annual mudik (homecoming) period.

According to the Ministry of Transport’s Survey on Potential
Population Movement During the Eid Holiday in 2026, the number of
migrants returning home is estimated to reach 146.48 million people, or
approximately 52 per cent of Indonesia’s population. Of these, 12.74
million are expected to use motorcycles for their journey home.

Aris Adi Leksono, Commissioner of the Indonesian Child Protection
Commission (KPAI), stated that for many people, motorcycles remain the
most accessible and affordable mode of transport to return to their home
villages. However, long-distance motorcycle travel carries significant
risks, particularly for children. It is therefore important for parents
to ensure the safety, health, and comfort of their children during the
homecoming journey.

“KPAI urges those returning home by motorcycle with children to truly
pay attention to child safety and comfort during the journey. Ensure
that children receive adequate protection and sufficient rest time,”
Aris said in a written statement released on Sunday (15 March 2026).

He explained that long-distance travel can make children more
susceptible to fatigue, dehydration, and health problems, particularly
if the journey is lengthy and traffic conditions are congested. For this
reason, KPAI urges motorcycle riders to ensure their vehicles are in
good and safe condition before travelling. Additionally, parents are
asked to use proper safety equipment for their children and take regular
rest breaks during the journey.

“Parents must ensure that children receive adequate food, drink, and
rest time,” said Aris.

KPAI also encourages regional governments, transport agencies, and
stakeholders along the homecoming routes to strengthen support for
motorcycle travellers. Such support includes providing adequate, clean,
and child-friendly rest areas along the route. This includes ensuring
the availability of sanitation facilities and family rest areas, as well
as providing easily accessible health service posts for travellers with
children.
",
