Return to the sea, Soeharto says<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto said yesterday it was now
\ntime for Indonesian people to \"return to the sea\" because land
\nresources were no longer adequate to meet their needs.<\/p>\n
In a speech delivered by State Minister of Research and
\nTechnology B.J. Habibie at the opening of the convention on
\nIndonesian maritime development in Ujungpandang, South Sulawesi,
\nSoeharto said Indonesia needed to give more attention to its
\nmarine resources.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesia's maritime development was slowed by lack of
\nmoney, technology and human resources. It is not easy to develop
\nthe country's maritime industry without a lot of money, advanced
\ntechnology, accurate planning, implementation and control, the
\nPresident said.<\/p>\n
\"That is why we need proper coordination in its planning,
\nexecution and control,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he stressed, an integrated and comprehensive plan
\nneeded to be drawn up because the maritime industry covered the
\nsectors of transportation, marine services, mines and energy,
\ntourism and human resources.<\/p>\n
\"I hope Indonesians will take concrete steps toward its
\ndevelopment,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which will conclude on Thursday, was preceded by
\nthe presentation of a paper titled, \"Agreement and Determination
\nin the Indonesian Maritime Continent Development.\"<\/p>\n
The convention, which will conclude on Dec. 21, will be
\nhighlighted with an exhibition of ships and a folk festival, as
\nwell as the signing of at least 10 agreements including ones on
\ndigital mapping for marine resources and development planning for
