Retraining important, Wardiman says<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro emphasized yesterday the importance of giving
\ngraduates access to retraining to meet the very dynamic needs of
\nmodern occupations.<\/p>\n
"All graduates should be prepared to be retrained to catch up
\nwith the latest developments in their fields," he said at the
\ngraduation ceremony for 190 new masters of business
\nadministration at the business school of the Institute for
\nManagement Education and Development's School of Management.<\/p>\n
He said that work structures are always changing due to the
\nrapid development of technology. "Currently, the time between a
\ntechnological discovery and its application is getting shorter.
\nThis will continue to change our production systems," he noted.<\/p>\n
Schools for professionals, he said, should be able to train
\ntheir students to both master a special skill and learn new
\nmethods, and encourage their students to become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n
Asked about the complaints of many foreign and local
\nbusinessmen about the shortage of professionals in the country,
\nhe said the link and match program should be pursued by the
\nprofessional schools.<\/p>\n
This is designed to tailor the education system to the
\npublic's needs.<\/p>\n
"With the link and match program we can improve our national
\nproductivity and competitive edge to face the forthcoming
\nregional free trade," he said.<\/p>\n
Businessmen claim that the shortage of qualified professionals
\nforces them to hire foreigners or poach experienced professionals
\nfrom other companies, although they have to pay them higher
\nsalaries.<\/p>\n
Enggartiasto Lukita, former chairman of Real Estate Indonesia
\nand a commissioner of PT Bangun Cipta Pratama said that the
\nshortage is particularly felt at the middle-management level.<\/p>\n
"I think the government should give further tax incentives to
\ncompanies for organizing training for workers," he said.<\/p>\n
Asked about possible tax incentives, Wardiman said that the
\ngovernment was still discussing the subject but was hopeful that
\nthey would be given.<\/p>\n
"The government will finally give them. It's only a matter of
