Retirees defy order to leave<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Around 200 retired policemen and
\ntheir families resisted a move to expel them from a housing
\ncomplex on Jl. Toddopuli on Friday.<\/p>\n
During their protest, the complex residents, including
\nhousewives and children, set tires alight along the main entrance
\nroad to the complex and closed their front doors.<\/p>\n
Police personnel deployed to evict the residents, however,
\ndefied the opposition and stormed into the houses even managing
\nto carry several pieces of furniture out of the buildings.<\/p>\n
The order to expel the complex residents came from South
\nSulawesi Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Sudibyo on Thursday after
\na previous instruction, that the retirees and their families
\nleave the houses, was ignored.<\/p>\n
A policeman said, \"We are just following orders, so what can
\nwe do? They are our seniors but we have to obey (the order).\"<\/p>\n
One of the retired policemen, Mukaddis, said he and other
\nresidents would stay until they found new houses and they also
\nplanned to demand compensation for the money they had spent on
\nrenovating the houses.<\/p>\n
\"We will stay until we receive clear answers on our future
\nhomes and demand for compensation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
As of Friday afternoon, the situation in the housing complex
