Retired officers defend Constitution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Some 120 retired military and police officers formed
\na front on Friday to defend the 1945 Constitution and ensure that
\nthe current amendments did not deviate from its spirit.<\/p>\n
The officers said that the ongoing process of amending the
\n1945 Constitution should not betray the Proclamation of
\nIndependence.<\/p>\n
The front's establishment was attended by, among others,
\nformer vice president Try Sutrisno, former House deputy speaker
\nSyaiful Sulun, former chief of the State Intelligence
\nCoordinating Board (BAKIN) Sudibyo, former Air Force chief Sri
\nMulyono Herlambang, former Armed Forces general affairs chief
\nSoeyono, a, and former chiefs of the Armed Forces' Intelligence Body
\n(BIA), Samsir Siregar and Ari Sudewo.<\/p>\n
According to Syaiful Sulun, the group believed that the
\nongoing amendment process had been conducted arbitrarily, and had
\nbeen based on half-baked thinking.<\/p>\n
The group charged that the proposed amendments were aimed at
\nthe creation of an Indonesian Republic based on liberalism,
\ncapitalism and individualism.<\/p>\n
Syaiful said the group's members felt they had to marshall
\ntheir forces because of their deep concerns over efforts to
\nchange the state ideology Pancasila and the structure of the
