Agriculture Minister and head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas)\nAmran Sulaiman has given an update on the laboratory test results for\nfortified rice, which was previously found not to meet standards.<\/p>\n
Amran said the test results are still being awaited. When asked when\nthe laboratory results would be announced, he did not give a specific\ndate.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust pray. Wait,\u201d Amran said when met at the office of the\nCoordinating Ministry for Food in Jakarta on Monday (7\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
When asked again about the possibility of new findings or further\ndevelopments from the fortified rice inspections, Amran asked the public\nto wait.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust wait for the invitation,\u201d he said firmly.<\/p>\n
Regarding plans to set a Highest Retail Price (HET) specifically for\nfortified rice, the government has yet to make a decision. He said the\npolicy would still be studied.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will study it later,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Previously, Amran revealed that the results of inspections by four\nlaboratories showed that more than 90% of the fortified rice examined\ndid not meet standards.<\/p>\n
He delivered the findings during a hearing with Commission IV of the\nHouse of Representatives (DPR RI) at the Parliamentary Complex on\nTuesday (1\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
\u201cWith your permission, ma\u2019am, 90% of it is not correct (does not meet\nstandards). Previously, this kind of thing was diverted from medium to\npremium rice. Now, thank God, that is fine. It turns out this behaviour\nhas shifted to fortified rice with no vitamins in it, ma\u2019am. There is\nnone in it (the vitamin content),\u201d Amran said during the hearing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe examined it using labs, several labs, four labs, and 90% have no\nvitamins, only the label says so. Now this is our task together with law\nenforcement, the Food Task Force,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
Bapanas also recorded that from its surveillance of fortified rice\nacross Indonesia, 27 of the 28 brands inspected were declared Not\nFulfilling Requirements (TMS). Only one brand was declared to meet the\nrequirements.<\/p>\n
The issue has drawn attention because the rice was marketed using a\nfortification label, but the vitamin content claimed was not found in\nlaboratory tests.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo (vitamin content), just the label. It is simply claimed. The\nbrand says fortified but there is nothing inside. So, with your\npermission, ma\u2019am, we will follow up on it,\u201d Amran said firmly.<\/p>\n
The findings also relate to a significant price difference. Bapanas\nrecorded that the average price of fortified rice that failed to meet\nstandards reached Rp23,385 per kg, while the comparison rice was at\nRp13,689 per kg.<\/p>\n
With a difference of around Rp9,695 per kg, Amran previously\nestimated that potential consumer losses could reach Rp89.19 trillion,\nassuming national rice consumption of 9.2 million tonnes per year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is private sector. So this is actually private rice priced at\nRp13,500\u2013Rp14,000 per kg. Our premium is Rp14,900 (per kg). This is\nbeing sold at Rp40,000 (per kg) with the fortification label,\u201d he\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Amran said Bapanas is still compiling a report based on the results\nof inspections by the four laboratories. At the time, he said the\nresults from all four laboratories showed the same findings.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Currently) we are compiling the report. There are already results\nfrom the four labs that examined it. The results are the same. Those\nthat do not meet standards, according to our provisions, are more than\n90%,\u201d Amran said after the meeting.<\/p>\n
The inspection results will subsequently be consolidated with\nsupporting data before being handed over to the Food Task Force for\nfollow-up.<\/p>\n
