Restore old glory of Batavia<\/p>\n
While moving in and around the beautiful city of Jakarta, one
\ncan easily spot various bonfires, emitting \"dense smoke\". Tons of
\ngarbage is burned every day. Sure, it is a convenient way to get
\nrid of waste material, but at what cost?<\/p>\n
All of us know that there is no \"free lunch\". We will
\ncertainly have to pay through the nose for our deeds in the near
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
Needless to say that the burning of garbage -- which consists
\nof various hazardous materials such as plastics, packaging
\nmaterials, etc. -- produces obnoxious and toxic fumes. These
\ngases pollute the environment and have a detrimental effect on
\nthe health of all \"living beings\". Furthermore, vehicle
\nemissions, particularly from buses and minibuses, create havoc in
\npolluting the environment.<\/p>\n
All of us notice this happening every day, but prefer to
\nremain silent sufferers, expecting someone else to take the
\naction. It is observed that the authorities are normally
\nsensitive tot he people's concern and objections, provided they
\nare repeatedly reported, collectively or individually.<\/p>\n
The media can certainly play an important role in protecting
\nthe environment by creating an awareness among the people and
\nurging the authorities to take the necessary steps.<\/p>\n
Let us pledge to return the old glory to \"Batavia\" in the
\ncoming millennium by returning the original color to its sky.<\/p>\n
