Restless chapters push for Chairul's ouster<\/p>\n

Several provincial chapters of the Indonesian Badminton
\nAssociation (PBSI) are demanding the immediate resignation of
\nchairman Chairul Tanjung and have asked for an extraordinary
\nmeeting to be held within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n
A newly established working group, comprising representatives
\nfrom five provincial chapters, announced here on Friday an
\nextraordinary meeting would be held on June 28 in Yogyakarta to
\nfind a acceptable replacement for Chairul.<\/p>\n
The working group members are Yacob Rusdianto of the East Java
\nchapter, Mustofa Djide of South Sulawesi, Icuk Sugiarto of
\nJakarta, Johannes IW of North Sumatra and Koesdarto Pramono of
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
"According to PBSI statutes, an extraordinary meeting is
\nnecessary as a formal forum when the chairman is to be replaced,"
\nthe head of the working group, Koesdarto, said here on Friday.<\/p>\n
As many as 25 provincial chapters have called for Chairul's
\nresignation on the grounds that he has failed to run the
\nassociation properly, resulting in a breakdown in the sport's
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
Chairul, who took over the post in 2001, has signaled that he
\nis willing to step down, but has said he will only resign after
\nan acceptable replacement has been found.<\/p>\n
While waiting for his replacement to be selected, Chairul said
\nhe would remain in his post until after the Athens Olympics in
\nAugust.<\/p>\n
However, with the restless chapters having set the date for an
\nextraordinary meeting, it may not be possible for Chairul to
\nmaintain his position until the Olympics.<\/p>\n
Koesdarto said the working group was expecting an official
\nletter from Chairul offering his resignation in order to allow
\nthe extraordinary meeting to proceed.<\/p>\n
"What we have received so far is a notification letter about
\nhis plan to resign. That is not enough," he said.<\/p>\n
Koesdarto also brushed aside the possibility that the
\nextraordinary meeting would fail to take place because organizers
\nwould be unable to get two-thirds of the chapters to attend, as
\nrequired in the organization's statutes.<\/p>\n
"According to the rules, if the chairman decides to resign it
\nis necessary to hold a meeting, but the two-thirds rule is not
\nnecessary," Koesdarto said.<\/p>\n
Former PBSI chairman Try Sutrisno has offered to mediate in
\nthe dispute.<\/p>",
