        "content": "<p>Respiratory illness, diarrhea kill 97 in Papua<\/p>\n<p>Nethy Dharma Somba, The Jakarta Post, Jayapura<\/p>\n<p>At least 97 infants died from respiratory ailments and other<br>\nillnesses that affected six districts in Paniai regency, Papua<br>\nover the past two months.<\/p>\n<p>Reverend John Cutts of Kemah Injil church said that the<br>\ninfants were among hundreds of infants and residents in the area<br>\nwho had exhibited symptoms such as vomiting, fever and diarrhea.<br>\n\"The data I got from PT Freeport Indonesia stated 97 infants had<br>\ndied,\" said Cutts on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that a team of doctors from the mining company had<br>\nbeen dispatched to the area to treat the residents.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Condro and Semi had been sent to Wandae district, Dr.<br>\nPatar and Ismail Kogoya to Dugalaga district and Dr. Lana Oyong<br>\nto Homeo district.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lana, who had returned to PT Freeport's base in<br>\nTembagapura, Timika, said that at least 52 infants in Homeo<br>\ndistrict alone had died from respiratory-related diseases and<br>\nother diseases of which diarrhea was the main symptom since<br>\nNovember this year. Homeo district has a population of 16,000.<\/p>\n<p>According to Lana, the diseases are common, but become fatal<br>\nin the absence of proper medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The district has a community health center, but it lacks<br>\nexperienced medical staff and medicine, resulting in poor<br>\ntreatment of local residents.<\/p>\n<p>Lana said that her team had treated some 300 residents,<br>\nincluding infants, during its three-day stay in the district, a<br>\n35-minutes flight from Tembagapura.<\/p>\n<p>But, official government data says otherwise. Jayapura Health<br>\nCrisis Center coordinator Paminto Widodo said local Paniai<br>\ngovernment officials reported that 108 infants in Paniai regency<br>\nhad died since November due to respiratory diseases and diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p>Paminto said that the government officials were investigating<br>\nwhat caused the respiratory disease and the diarrhea outbreak in<br>\nPaniai regency.<\/p>",
