Residents rail against project's pollution, noise<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Residents of the Bendungan Hilir subdistrict in
\nCentral Jakarta are objecting to the pollution emanating from
\nconstruction work on the upbeat Park Royale apartment complex
\nbeing developed by PT Sari Lembah Hijau.<\/p>\n
The residents lodged their protest with the city' agency for
\nthe supervision of development projects, saying that the
\nconstruction work was too noisy and was generating excessive air
\npollution.<\/p>\n
"The company is carrying on the construction work 24 hours a
\nday, causing noise. And this is disturbing the residents.
\nBesides, the piling work shakes our houses continuously," Rio
\nTambunan, one of the residents, told reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
He added that the dust from the project was polluting the air
\nin the neighborhood to such an extent that residents were having
\ndifficulty keeping their houses clean.<\/p>\n
Rio said the residents were also worried about the possibility
\nof an accident because the arm of the project's giant crane was
\noperating above the residential area.<\/p>\n
Since the project began, Rio said, wells in the area have been
\ndrying up and the quality of the water has deteriorated so much
\nthat it can no longer be used.<\/p>\n
The residents also complained about both the quantity and
\nquality of water supplied by PAM Jaya, the city-owned water
\ncompany. The developer provided PAM water to alleviate the
\neffects of the project on the water supply.<\/p>\n
"The quality and quantity of water supplied by the company is
\ntoo low. Besides, the pipe system is not permanently installed,"
\nRio said. He added that, since the project began, the residents
\nhave not been able to receive television transmission clearly.<\/p>\n
The residents also complained that the fences erected around
\nthe building site had narrowed Jl. Bendungan Taman Asahan and
\nthat many of the project's vehicles parked in the street, adding
\nto traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
About 55 families live immediately behind the site of the
\nproject, which is not due to be completed until 1997.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the company's public relations manager Rudy
\nSumoprawiro said that the project had obtained all the requisite
\npermits from the city agency which supervises development
\nprojects.<\/p>\n
"The company has all the permits needed for the project, so it
\nis a legal activity, but we intend to settle the problem through
\ntalks sponsored by the agency," he said.<\/p>\n
He refused to comment further on the protest, saying that the
\nmatter was being handled by the agency and that it would be
\nbetter for the parties to settle the matter in that forum.<\/p>\n
An official of the agency said that the office had already
\nreceived similar complaints from the residents and had already
\nasked its Central Jakarta branch to attend to the problem.<\/p>\n
"The office has invited both parties to solve the problem. The
\ntalks will take place on Friday (this week)," said Darmaji, of
\nthe agency's Central Jakarta branch.(yns)<\/p>",
