Residents protest regent's election<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra: The town of Sijunjung, some 200
\nkilometers southeast of Padang, came to a standstill on Friday
\nwhen approximately 3,000 people staged a protest over the
\nelection of a new regent.<\/p>\n
The protesters set up dozens of tents in front of the regent's
\noffice in Sijunjung, which is the capital of Sawahlunto regency.<\/p>\n
The protesters demanded Darius Apan and Hasan Zaini be
\ninstalled as regent and deputy regent, saying they had won the
\nelection for the posts.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of public transportation vehicles and private cars
\nparked along the side of the town's roads while residents sat in
\nthe streets, clogging up most roads in the town.<\/p>\n
The protest began when allegations surfaced that another
\ncandidate in the election, Arlis Ade, bribed members of the local
\nlegislature to vote for him.<\/p>\n
As many as 21 legislators have been questioned by police over
\nthe allegations.<\/p>\n
Darius Apan and Hasan Zaini received the most votes in the
\nelection, but they have not yet been installed in their posts.<\/p>\n
The term of office of outgoing regent Syahrul Anwar has been
\nextended for one month while the matter is resolved. (28\/sur)<\/p>",
