Residents protest eviction plan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: About 150 residents of Cipinang Melayu, East Jakarta,
\nstaged a rally at the City Council on Tuesday to protest against
\na plan to evict them from their homes.<\/p>\n
Leader of the protesters, Ojahan, said that on Monday at about
\nnoon, dozens of people from the East Jakarta municipality and
\nmembers of the Navy came to their area to distribute letters
\ndated May 29. The letters, signed by Mayor Koesnan Halim, said
\nthat their homes had to be demolished within seven days as they
\nwere constructed without building permits (IMB) on land belonging
\nto the Navy.<\/p>\n
Some of the residents said they already had permits, while
\nothers admitted they did not have any permits, but were ready to
\napply for them.<\/p>\n
However, they rejected the Navy's claim that it was the legal
\nowner of the land.<\/p>\n
According to Aloysius A, one of the residents, several years
\nago some Navy members came to \"borrow\" the title documents, but
\nnever returned them.<\/p>\n
He said that the residents often received anonymous phone
\ncalls warning them not to erect any buildings on the
