Residents protest against Freeport<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: A group of 31 Irianese claiming to
\nrepresent residents of Mimika regency lodged a fresh demand on
\nSaturday for the closure of gold and cooper mining company PT
\nFreeport Indonesia for human rights abuses resulting from its
\noperations.<\/p>\n
Led by Isak Ondowane and Mama Yosepha Alomang, the group said
\nmany of the indigenous residents had fallen victim to killings,
\ntorture, intimidation and rape since the company began
\nexploitation in the regency in early 1970s.<\/p>\n
\"There are many cases of the human rights violations left
\nunreported and unsettled. Many people do not know of the abuse we
\nhave been suffering,\" Isak said.<\/p>\n
The group channeled their demand to the provincial legislature
\nand the deputy governor.<\/p>\n
\"We have come to the conclusion that as long as the company
\ncontinues its exploitation, more Papuans will fall prey to rights
\nabuses,\" Isak said.<\/p>\n
During his year-end visit here, President Abdurrahman Wahid
\nagreed to change the name Irian Jaya to Papua. (eba\/04)<\/p>",
