In Rorotan subdistrict, North Jakarta, a waste sorting initiative has been implemented at households, starting with separating organic and inorganic waste to gradually change community behaviour without overwhelming residents. The programme provides sorting bins and local disposal points like Losida for kitchen waste that can be turned into compost, while organic waste is processed into animal feed and inorganic waste is handled through a waste bank. This phased approach aims to eventually include sorting into four categories, including residue and hazardous waste, contributing to better waste management and environmental sustainability in the area.

Rorotan subdistrict in North Jakarta has implemented household waste
sorting, focusing on separating two types of waste: organic and
inorganic. The head of Rorotan, Ahmad Fitroh, explained that sorting
into two types is the initial stage to accustom the community.
“Yesterday, indeed, because the goal is to change behaviour. Not all
residents understand the connection with sorting waste into four types.
We’re starting with two first,” he said when met by Kompas.com on Friday
(8/5/2026). According to him, if four types of sorting are implemented
directly, including residue and hazardous waste, residents might feel
burdened and inconvenienced. “Residents’ willingness might not be there
if it feels too troublesome. Because we want to change behaviour,
currently we’re only sorting into two types: organic and inorganic,” he
stated. He revealed that every resident’s home has now been provided
with waste sorting containers to separate organic and inorganic waste.
For residents reluctant to dispose of waste at drop points that are
somewhat far away, the subdistrict has also prepared Losida (kitchen
waste disposal) near residents’ homes. “This Losida can be used as a
place to dispose of organic waste, which can later become compost and
enrich plants,” he said. He also assured that waste collection using
carts or third parties is no longer used in Rorotan subdistrict. “There
are none here (waste carts). We ensure that because the organic waste is
weighed as a benchmark for success in one area,” he emphasised. The
organic waste will later be processed at the TPS 3R into pulp used as
animal feed and for maggots. Meanwhile, inorganic waste is collected by
residents to be managed through a waste bank. As for residue waste and
dry waste that cannot be processed, it will be sent to the Refuse
Derived Fuel (RDF) in Rorotan. Ahmad added that sorting waste into four
types, including residue and hazardous waste, remains a development
target for the programme in Rorotan going forward.
",
