Residents foiled court's land seizure<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Hundreds of residents in Rawa Mekar Jaya subdistrict,
\nSerpong district, Tangerang, foiled the Tangerang District
\nCourt's attempt to seize a one-hectare plot of land, including
\nthe site of the subdistrict administration office on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"However, this plot of land and the subdistrict administration
\noffice are the village's assets. Residents will oppose any
\nattempt to seize them,\" subdistrict chief Abul Rachim told
\nSerpong district chief Herry Heryanto, court officials, police
\nofficers and lawyers who arrived to witness the scheduled seizure
\non Thursday.<\/p>\n
Execution of the court order almost triggered violence when
\none angry resident beat a court representative who was heading to
\nthe subdistrict office to discuss the matter. The resident, named
\nJamal, was arrested by the police.<\/p>\n
The case first came to light when a local resident named Ali
\nSamad lost his claim over the land in a trial at the district
\ncourt. The Supreme Court overturned the district court's ruling
\non appeal in 1998. Ali Samad had reportedly received financial
\nbacking to see the case through from a man called Joong.<\/p>\n
After the implementation of the Supreme Court's verdict, the
\nTangerang District Court ordered the seizure on behalf of the
\nplaintiff.<\/p>\n
\"The plaintiff won the case because he bought both Tangerang
\nDistrict Court and Supreme Court officials. I can say this
\nbecause Supreme Court officials previously came here, asked for
\nRp 25 million and promised to reject the plaintiff's
\nlawsuit,\" said Rachim. --JP<\/p>",
