Residents complain to legislators<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former residents of the Kembangan Utara
\nsubdistrict in West Jakarta voiced their desperation yesterday at
\nthe House of Representatives for what they perceive to be an
\nirresponsible act of demolition.<\/p>\n
Their houses on the plot of land, which measures 4,000 square
\nmeters, were demolished on Nov. 4, 1995, by the West Jakarta
\nmayoralty for no clear reason, a resident said.<\/p>\n
\"There were no warnings or warrants. The demolition squad just
\ncame on Saturday and leveled our neighborhood to the ground in
\ntwo hours,\" he added.<\/p>\n
If nothing else, the residents said, they want to know why the
\nplot, which is located between the Green Garden and Taman Kota
\nhousing complexes, was cleared.<\/p>\n
Tugimun, the residents' spokesman, told The Jakarta Post that
\nresidents were given rights to use the land. Many of them have
\nlived there since 1971, though none have land certificates.<\/p>\n
\"We deserve to be treated like human beings, don't we?\"
\nTugimuns said on behalf of 68 families.<\/p>\n
The residents were received by House members of the ruling
\nGolkar faction, who said they would look into the matter.<\/p>\n
\"We just hope that they are sincere. Nothing ever turns out
\nfrom our visits to the City Council and the National Commission
\non Human Rights,\" another resident added. (14)<\/p>",
