Residents complain over flood<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Residents of Kapuk subdistrict in West Jakarta
\ncalled on city authorities on Wednesday to immediately solve the
\nhigh level of sea water which has flooded their area for years.<\/p>\n
Locals said the constant presence of sea water had damaged
\nbuildings and produced an unpleasant odor in the neighborhood.
\nThe situation becomes the worst during the rainy season, they
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The sea level in some parts of the area is higher than the
\nground, the people added.<\/p>\n
"Floods here occur even during the dry season. Even a heavy
\nrain in the higher elevation of Bogor in West Java can leave us
\nwith a flood," a resident of Jl. Kapuk Poglar, Mustofa, 34, said.<\/p>\n
Residents placed sandbags around their property in order to
\nprotect their houses and factories from the water.<\/p>\n
Mustofa and other Kapuk residents said the unfavorable
\nconditions began in the early 1980s, following the massive
\nconstruction of factories and warehouses in the area built
\nwithout care for the environment.<\/p>\n
They used to fill in their foundations with tons of soil and
\nit blocked the water, the residents said.<\/p>\n
Bule, another resident, said the locals suffered for years in
\nsilence without protesting because they knew the Jakarta
\nadministration was reluctant to hear any complaints from people
\nlike them.<\/p>\n
"I hope the authority will dredge the nearby Kali Angke river
\nto allow the water to flow properly and, hopefully, free us from
\nthis flood," he said.<\/p>\n
Bule said local residents suffered more due to a nearby pig
\nslaughterhouse which belongs to city-owned Dharma Jaya company.<\/p>\n
"The water is mixed with pig excrement, leaving a repugnant
\nodor in the air," he said.<\/p>\n
Located about seven kilometers from Jakarta Bay, Jl. Kapuk
\nPoglar is near crowded Jl. Daan Mogot, which connects the capital
\nwith Tangerang and is home to thousands of factories.<\/p>\n
The residents of Kapuk Poglar also face problems of air and
\nwater pollution, which has resulted from the factories.<\/p>\n
The water swamps the busy but narrow street of Jl. Kapuk
\nPoglar every day, leaving no area for pedestrians. (ind)<\/p>",
