Residents of the Sukadiri neighbourhood in Kasemen District, Serang\nCity, Banten, held a ceremony to commemorate the 81st anniversary of\nIndonesian independence, enlivened by a colossal heroic drama\nperformance at the historic site of Surosowan Palace in Banten Lama.<\/p>\n
Sukadiri Squad chairman Miftahullah said in Serang on Monday that the\nindependence celebration is a regular annual agenda organised through\nmutual cooperation and self-funding by the local community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe concept uses a colossal drama featuring Banten hero figures. The\naim is for today\u2019s young people to know who the true Banten heroes were,\nnamely KH Ahmad Khotib and KH Syam\u2019un, who pioneered independence in the\nBanten region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the storyline, set against the backdrop of old\nBanten culture, tells of four young men carrying a mandate from Bung\nKarno who arrived in the Banten region. The young men then met local\nheroes KH Ahmad Khotib and KH Syam\u2019un to spread the news of the 17\nAugust 1945 independence proclamation to the wider community.<\/p>\n
In addition to the performance rich in historical value at the site\nof the former Banten Kingdom, residents also succeeded in unfurling a\nlong red-and-white flag, which was met with great enthusiasm from\nparticipants.<\/p>\n
Miftahullah revealed that preparations for the event took about a\nmonth. Although the organisers faced several technical obstacles\nregarding funding and permits, the event ran smoothly with the\nparticipation of around 500 to 600 local residents.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the ceremony and colossal drama, we continued with a carnival\naround Jalan Baru before returning to the gathering point,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
The high level of enthusiasm was also felt directly by the residents\nwho attended. Aliyudin, a Sukadiri resident who took part in enlivening\nthe event, said he was proud of the initiative shown by the young people\nin his neighbourhood.<\/p>\n
