Residents block marble mine<\/p>\n
MAUMERE, East Nusa Tenggara: At least 100 residents of Netpala
\nvillage, Molo Utara in the Timor Tengah Selatan regency here
\nblocked a marble mine on Saturday in an effort to force the
\nmining company, PT Karya Asta Alam, to pull out of the area.<\/p>\n
A long-standing dispute has prevailed over extensive mining
\nexploitation which has resulted in widespread environmental
\ndamage, including water pollution. The company has also been
\nblamed for dividing people into those who accept and those who
\noppose the mine's activities.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore we reject the marble mine's exploitation here,\"
\nJuleta Baun, coordinator of Sanggar Suara Perempuan (Voice of
\nWomen Group), said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Timor Tengah Selatan regent Wilhelmus Nope urged locals to
\nallow the mining company to continue operations pending an
\nofficial decision on its fate. Nope said the mine has generated
\nrevenue for the regency.<\/p>\n
The company director Tommy Sianto said the firm had suspended
