Residents attack officials' homes<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Hundreds of residents attacked on Thursday the
\nhouses of Lontar village officials, who they accused of taking
\nbribes to allow offshore sand mining to resume in the area.<\/p>\n
The houses of village head Sanusi, village representative body
\n(BPD) chairman Animan and the chairman of Indonesian Fishermen's
\nUnion (HNSI) were damaged by the residents. The occupants managed
\nto escape through back entrances and no one was injured.<\/p>\n
The residents of Lontar and Alang-alang villages said the
\nauthorities had allowed offshore sand miner PT Jetsar to resume
\nits operations in the Tirtayasa area in Serang, Banten province.
\nThe company had resumed its operations on Monday, they said<\/p>\n
The villagers later took a flotilla of 40 small boats on a
\nmission to burn PT Jetsar's Kalimantan II and Aru II dredging
\nvessels but police halted them.<\/p>\n
The regent stopped PT Jetsar's operations earlier this month
\nbecause of local protests against the dredging's environmental
\nimpact.<\/p>\n
However, a source from the regency office said Serang Regent
\nBunyamin had again given the project the green light.<\/p>\n
\"(The decision) was based on a study that said the sand
\ndredging did not cause environmental damage as was claimed by
\nresidents ... the company is allowed to resume operations but it
\nhas to follow the rules,\" the source said. -- JP<\/p>",
