Residents ask that waste be processed elsewhere<\/p>\n

Residents living near the abandoned Pondok Cabe bus terminal in
\nPamulang district, Tangerang regency, strongly oppose the
\nregental administration's plan to use the site to accommodate a
\nwaste treatment facility.<\/p>\n
A representative of the residents, Gunawan, said on Tuesday
\nthat residents from four community units would suffer if the plan
\nwere implemented as the air would be heavily polluted with the
\nputrid smell of waste being processed there, even though
\nincinerators would be used.<\/p>\n
"The incinerators, which will produce heat, will be installed
\nnear (state oil and gas firm) Pertamina gas pipelines that run
\nclose to the terminal," he said, adding that there was always a
\npossibility that the pipelines could explode someday.<\/p>\n
The residents held a meeting on Monday and decided to object
\nto the plan. They will convey their rejection to the regency
\nsanitation and parks agencies on Wednesday during a meeting at
\nwhich the agency is slated to officially introduce the plan to
\nthe residents.<\/p>\n
People living near Bantar Gebang dump, Bekasi municipality,
\nand Bojong dump, Bogor regency, opposed their respective
\nadministration's plans to allow Jakarta to dump its daily waste
\nat the two sites, claiming that the practice damaged the
\nenvironment and caused health problems for residents.<\/p>\n
Sanitation agency head Hermansyah claimed he understood the
\nlocals' reason for objecting to the plan but said that his agency
\nwould set up incinerators on the unused terminal to process
\nnonorganic waste, including plastic, into concrete bricks.<\/p>\n
"The incinerators can recycle up to five trucks of plastic
\nwaste collected daily from Ciputat and other markets. The waste
\nis left over from that sent to the Jati Waringin dump in Mauk
\ndistrict," he said.<\/p>\n
Besides the locals, Indonesian Builders Association (Gapensi)
\nregency chapter chairman Adang Iskandar also opposed the plan.<\/p>\n
He said the terminal, built in 1994, was located in a
\nresidential area. If the administration converted the terminal to
\na waste treatment facility, it would affect the locals' health.<\/p>\n
"I have a responsibility to oppose it because we almost came
\nto blows with the locals when building the terminal," he said.<\/p>\n
Adang also suggested the administration build a sports center
\nat the site of the former terminal as it would be more beneficial
\nfor residents.<\/p>\n
Since it was completed in 1996, the terminal has barely been
\nused. Drivers of public minivans and buses refused to enter the
\nterminal because the road access was very narrow.<\/p>",
