Residents ask for compensation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): About forty residents of Cipinang Besar Selatan
\nin Jatinegara district, East Jakarta, went to the City Council
\nyesterday to request help in obtaining reasonable compensation
\nfor their land.<\/p>\n
The residents represented 85 families who are facing eviction
\nbecause the 7,333-square-meter plot of land on which they live
\nwill be cleared to make way for the construction of a hospital.<\/p>\n
The residents said that they bought the land from Mastur, who
\nclaimed to be the rightful representative of the landowner, but
\nwithout the exchange of any documents.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 22, Jatinegara District Chief Agus Salim Utut ordered
\nthe residents to move away voluntarily within seven days on the
\ngrounds that the land had been sold to the Harapan Kita
\nFoundation, which will establish the hospital.<\/p>\n
Agus said in his order that security and public officers will
\ndemolish their houses forcefully if the residents fail to abide
\nby the order.<\/p>\n
Last week the residents met with the council's Commission A,
\nin charge of administration, security and public order. They
\nasked the council to urge the Jatinegara district chief to
\nsuspend the demolition until an agreement on reasonable
\ncompensation was reached.<\/p>\n
\"Even though we bought the land without any documents, can the
\nowner of the land order us to move away without any
\ncompensation?\" Bambang Widjanarko, one of the residents, asked.<\/p>\n
Abdoelhamid Notowidagdo, secretary of the commission, said
\nyesterday that the residents had fallen victim to an unscrupulous
\nperson.<\/p>\n
He said that the rightful owner of the land, PT Central Bumi
\nIndah, never knew of the transactions between Mastur and the
\nresidents.<\/p>\n
Tatang Solichin, another member of the commission, told the
\nresidents to take their case to the police since this incident
\ncould be categorized as a criminal act.<\/p>\n
However, the commission members promised that they will
\ncontact all related parties, including PT Central Bumi Indah and
\nHarapan Kita Foundation to discuss the residents' complaints.
