Residents angry over fuel leak<\/p>\n
BOGOR: Residents of Bitungsari village, Ciawi district, Bogor,
\nhave complained that their groundwater has been contaminated by
\nindustrial waste from the PT Jakarama Tama factory where Gaga
\ninstant noodles are made.<\/p>\n
Didit, one of the residents, said here on Tuesday that about
\n20 families had been directly affected by a fuel leak from the
\nfactory.<\/p>\n
\"For about two weeks we could not use the water from our
\nartesian wells. We had to ask for water from other villagers
\nwhose water was not yet contaminated,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that when residents checked the water it was muddy and
\ncontained inflammable liquid that ignited when lit.<\/p>\n
\"The Gaga factory should take responsibility for this
\ncontamination. It should also clean up other waste material that
\nhas caused unpleasant odors,\" Didit said.<\/p>\n
Ali, a human resource development manager of the company,
\nacknowledged that the factory's fuel pipe had fractured during
\nthe last two weeks and they were trying to address the problem.<\/p>\n
\"Regarding other waste, we're not the only company dumping it.
\nOther companies have also dumped their waste there. But ours has
\nbeen used by local people for the last 10 years to produce
\ncompost for agriculture,\" he said. --JP<\/p>",
