        "content": "<p>Beijing (ANTARA) - A team of researchers has developed simple,\nlow-cost technology to detect rheumatic heart disease at an early stage,\nBen-Gurion University of the Negev said, according to Xinhua on Friday\n(16 October).<\/p>\n<p>The researchers said the new method, described in the journal ACS\nSensors, could make screening for the disease more accessible in remote\nareas with limited medical resources.<\/p>\n<p>Rheumatic heart disease can develop after an untreated streptococcal\nbacterial throat infection, when the immune response damages the heart\nvalves. It remains one of the leading causes of illness and death among\nyoung people in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>The new technology uses polymers to detect disease markers in blood.\nIf the markers are present, the polymer emits a light signal that can be\nmeasured using basic laboratory equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers said the technology could also be adapted to detect\nmarkers associated with other diseases.<\/p>",
