Jakarta \u2013 The Assistant Deputy for Gender Mainstreaming in Human\nDevelopment, Culture, Community Empowerment, and Regional Government at\nthe Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection (KPPPA), Dewa Ayu\nLaksmiadi Janapriati, has stressed that research support is necessary\nfor creating gender-based policies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need strong research support, such as the availability of\ncomprehensive and sex-disaggregated data. Sex-disaggregated data is\ntherefore very important for understanding the different needs, access,\nand health experiences between women and men,\u201d Ayu said in an online\ndiscussion held in Jakarta on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Ayu emphasised that without such data, health policies risk being\ngender-neutral but unable to address actual disparities. She noted that\nstrengthening the data system could utilise various sources, including\nnational health surveys, data from health facilities, and\ncommunity-based data.<\/p>\n
Specifically, she said, data should paint a more detailed picture of\nwomen\u2019s health conditions, including reproductive health, mental health,\nand invisible care work burden.<\/p>\n
\u201cSecond, research needs to strengthen an interdisciplinary approach.\nWomen\u2019s health problems are not only clinical but also influenced by\neducational, economic, environmental, and social factors, as well as\ngender relations within households, which have significant impact,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ayu therefore urged collaboration between health researchers, social\nscientists, economists, gender scholars, and policy experts as crucial\nfor conducting research that provides comprehensive understanding and\nenables innovative, contextualised, and effective policy solutions.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, she highlighted the need to strengthen research focusing\non women\u2019s role in family health resilience. According to Ayu, women\noften make decisions regarding family nutrition, child care, and healthy\nliving behaviours at home. Research should therefore explore how to\nenhance women\u2019s capacity in these areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cSuch research is important to demonstrate that investment in women\u2019s\nempowerment has broad benefits for health development,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cResearch findings need to be linked to policy formulation and\ndevelopment programmes. Quality research should not stop at academic\npublication but must be translated into applicable policy\nrecommendations.
