The United States military claims to have rescued a fighter jet crew\nmember shot down in Iran. The operation to evacuate the crew was\ndescribed as highly complex.<\/p>\n
Dozens of special forces members, US fighter jets, helicopters, and\nCIA operatives were deployed in the rescue mission, according to US\nmedia reports.<\/p>\n
On Sunday (05\/04), US President Donald Trump stated on social media:\n\u201cWe have rescued the F-15 crew member who suffered serious injuries and\nshowed great bravery, in the mountains of Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n
The incident began on Friday (03\/04), when an F-15 jet carrying a\nweapons systems officer and a pilot was shot down in southern Iran. This\nwas the first time a US fighter jet had been shot down by enemy forces\nin more than 20 years.<\/p>\n
The two US military personnel in the F-15E Strike Eagle managed to\neject from the aircraft. The pilot was rescued on the same day, but the\nsecond crew member was reported missing.<\/p>\n

After reaching the ground, the crew member had only a pistol to\ndefend himself, US officials said.<\/p>\n
According to the US military, the crew member had received training\nfor such situations, including activating marker signals, heading to\nhigher ground, hiding, and establishing communications.<\/p>\n
Based on US media reports, the crew member hid in a mountain crevice\nand limited the use of markers due to fears that the signals could be\ndetected by Iran. He reportedly waited for the rescue team to\narrive.<\/p>\n

The CIA played a key role in the rescue operation, according to a\nsenior Trump administration official who spoke to US media.<\/p>\n
The US intelligence agency tracked the crew member\u2019s exact location\nto the mountain crevice and relayed the information to the Pentagon.<\/p>\n
Trump said the crew member\u2019s location was monitored \u201c24 hours a day\u201d\nby US officials planning the rescue operation. He was \u201chunted by our\nenemies, who were getting closer hour by hour,\u201d the President added.<\/p>\n
The CIA also employed deception tactics against the enemy, according\nto US reports, by spreading news within Iran that US forces had located\nthe second crew member.<\/p>\n
President Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that the US military\n\u201csent dozens of aircraft, armed with the deadliest weapons in the world,\nto pick him up.\u201d<\/p>\n
As US special forces moved towards the stranded crew member, bombs\nand gunfire were used to keep Iranian forces away from his location,\naccording to US reports.<\/p>\n
US media also reported that two transport aircraft for flying out the\nrescue team were unable to take off from a remote base in Iranian\nterritory. The two aircraft were then destroyed to prevent them from\nfalling into enemy hands. The special forces then flew out using three\nadditional aircraft to retrieve the crew, the report added.<\/p>\n
Footage and photos confirmed by BBC Verify show the smoking wreckage\nof the aircraft in a mountainous area in central Iran, about 50 km\nsoutheast of Isfahan city.<\/p>\n
The Iranian military said two US military transport planes C-130 and\ntwo Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the operation and that\n\u201ca deception and escape mission at an abandoned airport in southern\nIsfahan was completely foiled.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iranian state media said on Sunday (05\/04) that forces of the Islamic\nRevolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had shot down a US drone in Isfahan\nwhile it was searching for the missing crew member. The BBC has not been\nable to confirm either version of events near Isfahan.<\/p>\n

Before midnight US time, the rescue operation was completed and the\ncrew member was flown to Kuwait for medical treatment, US officials\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Trump said the officer \u201csuffered serious injuries,\u201d but \u201che will be\nfine.\u201d<\/p>\n
The US government has not disclosed any information about the exact\nlocation where the crew member was rescued or his identity.<\/p>\n
Former US military official William Fallon, a retired US Navy\nadmiral, told the BBC that \u201ctime of day\u201d likely favoured the rescue\nmission.<\/p>\n
\u201cDarkness is better for our people because they are accustomed to\noperating at night.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fallon said that when flying over enemy territory, \u201cyou have to be\nprepared to be the one who gets hit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moments before 00:00 EDT (04:00 GMT) or on Sunday (05\/04) at 11:00\nWIB, US media reported that the second crew member had been found.<\/p>\n
Trump wrote on social media that the US \u201cWILL NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN\nWARFIGHTER BEHIND!\u201d<\/p>\n
Iran insists the operation was a failure.<\/p>\n
