Reports on anti-drug raids win support<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Despite complaints from concerned officials,
\nMinister of Information Harmoko strongly supports recent media
\nreports on drug syndicates and raids against suspected
\ntraffickers in the city.<\/p>\n
\"In my opinion, the articles have given valuable information
\n(to the government) because each of them have provided color and
\nviews from different angles,\" the minister told reporters shortly
\nafter officially opening a week-long seminar on drug prevention
\nfor Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) media personnel
\nhere yesterday.<\/p>\n
Earlier, a number of officials, many from police offices,
\nclaimed that the massive media coverage on drugs and the in-
\ndepth, transparent news on their sales at several night clubs in
\nthe capital hampered their well-planned operations.<\/p>\n
\"We also need media coverage but not on drug raids because
\nsuch operations are categorized as top-secret,\" a senior police
\nofficer told The Jakarta Post here recently.<\/p>\n
He said that unfortunately the in-depth reports about drug
\nabuse in many media over the past few weeks have led to \"the
\ndisappearance\" of many consumers and traffickers at several
\nplaces already listed by police as sites where transactions of
\nvarious banned drugs often take place.<\/p>\n
However, Minister Harmoko said he believes that the media
\nreports have helped to give clear information to the public on
\nthe danger of banned drugs to the younger generation, as well as
\non the working patterns of the syndicates and drug trafficking
\nsites.<\/p>\n
\"So, lots of people now know the bad impact of the drugs on
\npeople, particularly on youths,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The seminar which started yesterday was attended by 50
\njournalists, including those from other ASEAN countries, such as
\nthe Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore and
\nThailand.<\/p>\n
The seminar at the BKKBN auditorium in East Jakarta will last
