Reporters demand proper probe<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, Central Java: The Yogyakarta chapter of the
\nIndonesian Journalists Association is considering whether to ask
\nthe National Commission on Human Rights to investigate the death
\nof a local reporter here last month.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the association's Yogyakarta chapter, Oka
\nKusumayudha, said yesterday that he would refer the case to the
\nrights commission if the police investigation into the murder was
\nunsatisfactory.<\/p>\n
Senior journalists have formed a fact-finding team to assist
\nthe police. The team has submitted five bundles of reports to the
\njournalists association in Jakarta, Oka said.<\/p>\n
Fuad Muhammad Safrudin was fatally beaten in his home on Aug.
\n13. He did not regain consciousness before he died in intensive
\ncare three days later. The Bernas journalist is survived by his
\nwife and two children.<\/p>\n
\"If the police neglect to follow up our team's findings, we
\nwill seek help from the National Commission on Human Rights,\" Oka
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
According to Oka, the association had encouraged the police to
\nspeed up their investigation.<\/p>\n
\"The team works relentlessly, meticulously and professionally,
\nafter all, they are used to searching for facts,\" Oka said.<\/p>\n
Oka added that the Chief of the Yogyakarta Police Precinct
\nCol. Darsono had promised a thorough and proper investigation.
