Repairs set after tiles fall from center's roof<\/p>\n
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (JP): The 20th Southeast Asian Games
\norganizing committee plans renovations of the International
\nConvention Center (ICC) after tiles fell from the roof in two
\nseparate incidents.<\/p>\n
A section of the roof at the facility, which is home to the
\nMain Press Center during the nine-day sports event, fell on
\nWednesday following a storm. The same accident also occurred on
\nTuesday last week.<\/p>\n
Two heavy construction devices were at a site near the media
\ncenter on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The reconstruction project forced journalists to hike up a
\nhilly road after the organizers banned all shuttle buses from
\nentering the ICC compound.<\/p>\n
Some journalists resorted to using shuttle cars to enter the
\nback gate.<\/p>\n
Pengiran Haji Ismail, the adviser for accommodation and
\ncatering, told a news briefing on Thursday that such incidents
\ncould occur at any building.<\/p>\n
\"Since it happened at the SEA Games, it is very embarrassing.
\nIt might have happened two months ago but it actually happened
\nwhen we hosted an important event,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ismail guaranteed that the building remained safe for
\njournalists to work.<\/p>\n
\"Those in charge of construction have conducted their own
\nlaboratory tests on the building construction. And I can assure
\nyou that the structure of the building is very strong.\"<\/p>\n
Several people were injured and cars were damaged in last
\nTuesday's incident. Nobody was hurt on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Ismail said he was unsure when the project would finish.<\/p>\n
As a precaution, journalists and officials have been warned to
\nstay clear of areas marked with red lines.<\/p>\n
Renovations also are needed because the ICC will host the Asia
\nPacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting next year. (yan)<\/p>",
