        "content": "<p>A large number of workers at the French car manufacturer Renault have\ndeclared their firm rejection of plans to use car assembly lines for the\nproduction of military equipment or weapons. This stance was conveyed by\nFlorent Grimaldi, a member of the CGT trade union at Renault, on\nWednesday (9\/9).<\/p>\n<p>Grimaldi revealed that workers are concerned by the global trend\ntowards armed conflict. He argued that national budgets should be\nprioritised for the public service sector rather than the defence\nindustry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not welcome the general trend leading towards war. We also do\nnot welcome nations that pour billions of euros into weapons production,\nwhile we should be allocating budgets to firefighters, teachers,\nhospitals, and many other sectors that require additional funding,\u201d\nGrimaldi stated during an interview with the French television station\nLCI.<\/p>\n<p>This refusal does not come without consequences. Grimaldi emphasised\nthat Renault workers now face the risk of redundancy if they\nconsistently refuse instructions to assemble military equipment at the\nfactory. He added that the majority of workers have been committed from\nthe outset to producing civilian vehicles, not instruments of war.<\/p>\n<p>During the interview, Grimally also criticised President Emmanuel\nMacron\u2019s call to strengthen national armament. He quoted the French\nauthor Anatole France from 1922: \u2018They thought they were dying for their\ncountry, but in reality, they were dying for the industrialists\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This tension occurs amidst increasing military activity in Europe.\nThe Kremlin previously stated that Russia does not threaten any party,\nyet highlighted the increase in NATO troops near its western borders as\nan action endangering Russian interests.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the involvement of automotive companies such as\nRenault in military contracts, including drone production which began\nearlier this year, marks a shift in the function of civilian industrial\ninfrastructure in France to support the strengthening of national\ndefence.<\/p>",
