Removing anti-graft constraints<\/p>\n

Corruption in Indonesia has become a chronic disease, like a
\ntumor that is spreading all over the body and is nearly
\nincurable. Now the government has apparently become serious about
\ndealing with these criminals and needs the support of law
\nenforcers, state agencies and the rest of society to do something
\nabout it.<\/p>\n
Some time ago, a presidential decree on corruption elimination
\nwas issued and the Corruption Eradication Commission was
\nauthorized to conduct an anti-graft drive. However, so far big-
\nshot corruptors have not yet been prosecuted or face sanctions
\nbecause, we are told, because of certain legal \"constraints\".<\/p>\n
In order to overcome these constraints, the government plans
\nto issue a regulation in lieu of law (Perpu) as a breakthrough,
\nto remove all bottlenecks and rules that hamper the handling of
\ncorruption cases.<\/p>\n
According to the Attorney General for fraud Sudono Iswahyudi,
\nwith this Perpu, consent will not be needed from executive and
\nlegislative institutions to examine graft suspects who are public
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors and judges will not find it easy either to
\npostpone the detention of defendants under trial and any delay of
\ndetention of defendants will be accompanied by police
\nsurveillance to prevent their flight.<\/p>\n
In this way, all corrupt officials will hopefully be brought
\nto court and state funds saved for public interests. While
\ndisaster-stricken Aceh and Nias badly need assistance, care
\nshould be taken that the large amounts of relief aid will not
\nbecome part of any future irregularities.<\/p>\n
