        "content": "<p>The National Mandate Party (PAN) is mourning the loss of one of its\nfounders, Abdillah Toha, who passed away at the age of 84 on Tuesday (26\nMay). Viva Yoga Mauladi, PAN\u2019s Deputy Chairman, described Abdillah Toha\nnot only as a politician but also a modernist Islamic thinker and\ncolumnist. \u2018Abdillah Toha was a prominent Indonesian figure known as a\nsenior politician, writer, columnist, Muslim intellectual, former member\nof the House of Representatives (DPR RI), and one of the early leaders\nof the National Mandate Party (PAN),\u2019 Viva stated. Abdillah co-founded\nPAN with Amien Rais following Suharto\u2019s downfall in May 1998. In the\nDPR, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Defence Committee and Chairman\nof the PAN faction from 2004 to 2009. Born in Solo, Central Java, in\n1942, Abdillah graduated from the University of Western Australia and\nwas in the same cohort as the 11th Vice President, Boediono. Despite\ngraduating with a degree in commerce, Abdillah was also renowned as a\nmodernist Islamic thinker. One of his notable works is \u2018What\u2019s the Point\nof Religion?
