Relocating schools not the answer to brawls: Wardiman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro says that relocating schools will not stop students
\nbrawling.<\/p>\n
He said that the idea to relocate schools which are close to
\neach other or that are close to shopping centers is good. \"But,
\nthat's not the point. Thorough studies are needed and they take
\ntime,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wardiman said many factors should be taken into consideration
\nbefore a decision on school relocations is made. \"We must think
\nabout the transportation for students and teachers, who mostly
\nlive in areas close to their schools. The project would be very
\nexpensive, too,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Jakarta Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata suggested
\nthat where there are neighboring schools, one should be moved to
\nprevent the students from brawling.<\/p>\n
Some schools are located in strategic areas, such as in
\nbusiness and shopping areas.<\/p>\n
Hamami expressed concern over the number of deaths that have
\noccurred in student brawls.<\/p>\n
A study started in April last year by Yogyakarta-based Gadjah
\nMada University and the public order office of Jakarta found
\nevidence of business interests behind the lingering students
\nbrawls. Some students involved in brawling said in interviews
\nthey were paid between Rp 10,000 and Rp 15,000 each for \"their
\ncourage\".<\/p>\n
Minister Wardiman said, however, that a shortage of public
\ntransportation has been the main problem behind students brawls.<\/p>\n
His opinion was that student brawls often take place at bus
\nshelters where a large number of students from different schools
\nmeet.<\/p>\n
\"We have suggested that the Ministry of Transportation add
\nmore buses for students,\" Wardiman said Saturday when
\ninaugurating a new laboratory of the state-owned senior high
\nschool SMU VI on Jl. Mahakam, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He called private transportation companies to also provide
\nbuses for students.<\/p>\n
When asked of the possibility of the brawls being engineered
\nby a third party, he replied; \"It's probably true.\"<\/p>\n
Three students have died in separate brawls, in West Jakarta,
\nNorth Jakarta and Central Jakarta over the last couple of weeks.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 6, Edi Saputra, a student from a private technical
\nhigh school in downtown Kota, West Jakarta, was stabbed to death
\nby three students from another school during a brawl on Jl.
\nLatumeten, Grogol district, West Jakarta. Two of the three
\nstudents have been arrested but the remaining student is still at
\nlarge.<\/p>\n
On the same day, Jamot, a student from a private technical
\nsenior high school in North Jakarta was stabbed to death in Jl.
\nJembatan Tiga, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Bachtiar Effendi, a student from a private technical high
\nschool, was stabbed to death by three students of another private
\nhigh school last Tuesday in Jl. Kramat Raya, in Central Jakarta.
\nThe death of Bachtiar Effendi prompted a riot on the following
\nday as angry friends of the victim threw stones at passersby on
\nthe street in front of the Central Jakarta Police precinct.<\/p>\n
The killers of both Jamot and Bachtiar are still at large.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police arrested at least 29 students from two private
\nsenior high schools involved in a brawl on Jl. Harmoni, Central
\nJakarta on Friday. Some students reportedly suffered head and
\nbody injuries.<\/p>\n
The police seized three machetes, two swords and some iron
\nbars.<\/p>\n
At least 12 students have died in brawls in the city over the
