'Relocate schools to avoid brawls'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata
\nsuggested yesterday that the authorities immediately relocate
\nschools that are situated close to each other or near shopping
\ncenters to avoid student brawls which usually resulted in
\ndestruction.<\/p>\n
\"I've aired this suggestion since 1987 when I was chief of the
\nCentral Jakarta Police, but it seems nobody heard me,\" Hamami
\ntold a meeting of executives of transportation firms.<\/p>\n
According to Hamami, police have learned that student brawls
\nmostly occurred where schools are situated close to each other or
\nnear shopping centers.<\/p>\n
\"When the schools close in the afternoon, a sea of around
\n5,000 students flock to the same place, waiting for buses to get
\nhome,\" Hamami said.<\/p>\n
This situation, he said, could easily provoke the young people
\ninto doing something that could lead to a brawl.<\/p>\n
\"It's almost impossible to stop the students in such a
\nsituation,\" Hamami said.<\/p>\n
\"It's the same with students whose schools are located near
\nshopping centers, such as those near the Blok M shopping center
\nin South Jakarta,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Hamami hoped that the suggestion would be \"heard\" by the
\nconcerned parties, such as the school owners, teachers and
\nauthorities.<\/p>\n
\"What I want is to relocate the schools and build new ones
\nwith complete facilities on the outskirts of the city,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to data from the city-owned PPD bus transport
\ncompany, at least two buses are damaged every day by students.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Hamami also suggested that transport
\ncompanies provide warning lights on the top of buses, and glass
\npartitions in taxis.<\/p>\n
A number of taxi drivers have been murdered in the past few
\nmonths in and around the city. (bsr)<\/p>",
