        "content": "<p>Relief chopper crashes in Nias<\/p>\n<p>Associated Press, Canberra<\/p>\n<p>An Australian navy helicopter carrying up to 11 people crashed<br>\non Saturday on the earthquake-devastated island of Nias, the<br>\ndefense ministry said, and media reported that nine people were<br>\nkilled.<\/p>\n<p>The navy Sea King helicopter crashed in the afternoon near the<br>\ntown of Gunung Sitoli, off the west coast of Sumatra, a defense<br>\nstatement said.<\/p>\n<p>The helicopter was from an Australian navy transport ship that<br>\narrived on Saturday from Singapore after three months of<br>\nproviding tsunami relief at in Aceh.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 11 people, including the helicopter's crew of three,<br>\nwere on board, the statement said, without giving further<br>\ndetails.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the North Sumatra information office R.E. Nainggolan<br>\nsaid the chopper crashed in Teluk Dalam, adding that the fate of<br>\nits 11 passengers was not clear.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Associated Press (AAP) -- which had a<br>\njournalist on the transport ship, the HMAS Kanimbla -- quoted the<br>\ncaptain as saying nine people were killed in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Commander George McGuire was quoted as saying two survivors<br>\nwere airlifted to the Kanimbla for emergency surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\"They are in a serious condition with leg fractures and other<br>\ninjuries,\" McGuire said. \"We believe the rest of the personnel<br>\ndied.\"<\/p>\n<p>Defense officials in Australia were not immediately available<br>\nfor comment.<\/p>\n<p>McGuire told the AAP that the helicopter was ferrying an<br>\nemergency medical team to a remote village as part of relief<br>\nefforts when it crashed.<\/p>\n<p>Five naval personnel as well as three from the Air Force and<br>\none member of the Army were on board the helicopter. Seven of the<br>\ndead were male and two were female, McGuire was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>McGuire said the transport ship was headed toward the crash<br>\nsite on the southern tip of Nias.<\/p>\n<p>The crew on the Kanimbla cried and bowed their heads in shock<br>\nin the ship's mess room when McGuire broke the news that their<br>\ncolleagues had been killed, AAP reported.<\/p>",
