Relatives of missing activists meet with ICRC<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Relatives of missing activists met with
\nrepresentatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross
\n(ICRC) here yesterday in a bid to press authorities to conduct a
\nthorough investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n
The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence
\n(Kontras), an independent advocate group for relatives of missing
\npersons, said the relatives approached the ICRC because they were
\nunsatisfied with the snail pace of the authority's investigation.<\/p>\n
"We went to the ICRC since the authorities here have been
\nunresponsive," Kontras deputy chairman Dadang Trisasongko told
\njournalists at the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation office in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Dadang lamented the fact that authorities had made little
\nprogress since they started their investigation last month.<\/p>\n
Minister of Defense and Security\/Armed Forces Commander Gen.
\nWiranto set up a team to investigate the cases. The team includes
\nthe Military Police chief, the assistant for security and social
\norder and the Armed Forces assistant for intelligence.<\/p>\n
Dadang said Kontras accompanied relatives of Suyat, Bimo
\nPetrus Anugrah, Noval Alkatiri, Yani Avri and Leonardus "Gilang"
\nNugroho Iskandar in a meeting yesterday with ICRC officials based
\nhere in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Suyat, a student of Sebelas Maret University in Surakarta,
\nCentral Java, went missing in February in Surakarta, while Bimo,
\na student activist from the Driyarkara School of Philosophy,
\nvanished in Jakarta last March.<\/p>\n
Noval, a businessman, and Yani, a public transportation
\ndriver, went missing during the campaign period for last year's
\ngeneral election, while activist Gilang, who was also known as a
\nstreet singer in Surakarta and nearby cities, was found dead in a
\nforest area in Magetan, East Java, on May 23 after he was missing
\nfor two days.<\/p>\n
The spokeswoman of the ICRC office here, Sri Wahyu Endah, told
\nThe Jakarta Post that the relatives met with the mission's deputy
\nhead, Pierre Gerber.<\/p>\n
"We will follow up the case on the basis of their
\ninformation," she said.<\/p>\n
The National Commission on Human Rights has claimed that
\nstudent and political activists who went missing were abducted by
