Rehabilitation center needs funds to expand<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A private rehabilitation center for handicapped
\nchildren faces difficulties expanding its services.<\/p>\n
\"Many parents leave their handicapped children with us for an
\nextended period, forcing us to reject new patients,\" said
\nYulianti, director of the Palsigunung rehabilitation center.<\/p>\n
Thirty children admitted in 1975 still live at the center
\nwhich has only 75 beds.<\/p>\n
\"These blind, deaf-mute and mentally retarded children require
\n24-hour care. They need to be helped with every physical
\nactivity, such as showering, eating, urinating and defecating,\"
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
The center also cares for children with multiple handicaps,
\ncerebral palsy, a disease which affects muscular control, as well
\nwith children with behavioral problems.<\/p>\n
The center's initial mission was to tend primarily for
\ntoddlers, Yulianti said.<\/p>\n
\"Because the sooner we can identify their physical
\ndifficulties, the greater are the chances for success,\" she told
\nvisitors from the Senopati Society, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Space and funding are the major constraints felt in trying to
\nexpand services, she said.<\/p>\n
Mrs. E.N. Sudharmono, head of the Senopati Society, urged
\nthe government to start building rehabilitation facilities for
\nphysically challenged citizens.<\/p>\n
\"The burden is almost insurmountable for many private
\nrehabilitation centers to operate optimally and efficiently,\"
\nMrs. Sudharmono said.<\/p>\n
She said the government has a rehabilitation center in Bekasi,
\nwhich assists only the blind.<\/p>\n
The society donated food, clothing, medication and money to
\nthe Palsigunung center during the visit. (14)<\/p>",
