Regulation for newcomers<\/p>\n

On July 17, 2001 Koran Tempo carried a story on page B6
\nregarding Central Kalimantan's drafting of a regulation on
\nMadurese moving to the province.<\/p>\n
I personally think the province should have known better than
\nto come up with such a regulation. This is totally unacceptable.
\nThey know that Indonesia is made up of many ethnic groups which
\nhave been living side by side across the archipelago for many
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Those involved in drafting the regulation, which dictates how
\npeople of a certain ethnic group should live in a certain area,
\nare really narrow-minded. Indonesia is reverting to the era
\nbefore the Youth Pledge was declared in 1928 and even before the
\ninception of Budi Oetomo (a national organization established on
\nMay 20, 1908 which later became the national awakening day). This
\nis a drawback and very saddening!<\/p>\n
Questions that may arise: Will other regions or local
\nadministrations follow suit? Will they create a similar
\nregulation for the people of Central Kalimantan going to their
\nland? What about the Central Kalimantan people who have been
\nliving in other areas such as East Java, Bali and Lampung for
\nyears?<\/p>\n
The local governments should foster goodwill among its
\nresidents and encourage the people to live in harmony because we
\nare all citizens of Indonesia, regardless of whether we are from
\nKalimantan, Java, Madura, Ambon and so forth.<\/p>\n
Central Kalimantan's Council is currently drawing up a
\nregulation governing all people entering the province that is
\nslated to be passed next year.<\/p>\n
Please stop being absurd.<\/p>\n
