Regional pencak silat federation to be established next month<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seven Asian countries which have pencak silat
\n(martial arts) federations in their respective countries will
\nmeet here on Oct. 2 to discuss the establishment of the Asia
\nPacific Pencak Silat Federation.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) executive
\ndirector Oyong Karmayudha said the eight countries (including
\nIndonesia) represented the other 22 Asian countries. He named the
\nseven other countries as Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam,
\nVietnam, Thailand, Laos and the Philippines.<\/p>\n
Oyong said that Indonesia would likely head the federation.<\/p>\n
\"We will declare the establishment of the Asia Pacific Pencak
\nSilat Federation. We will also arrange our program. We will send
\na letter to the Olympic Committee of Asia to request a pencak
\nsilat exhibition in the 2002 Asian Games in Pusan, South Korea,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Oyong said that IPSI would elect a new chairman for the 1999-
\n2003 term in a three-day national congress starting next
\nThursday. He said that Eddie M. Nalapraya, the current IPSI
\nchairman, was the sole candidate for the chairmanship.<\/p>\n
\"Eddie is willing to be reelected. He is the most suitable for
\nthe position,\" he said.<\/p>\n
National Sports Council (KONI) chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar
\nis expected to open the congress at the pencak silat training
\ncenter at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Indonesia Miniature Park)
\nin East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Speaking on KONI's plan to reprimand the 1999 SEA Games team
\nmanager, officials and Ni Made Wahyuni as recommended by the SEA
\nGames executive committee on Wednesday, Oyong said that the
\nfederation would study the possibility of making a clarification.<\/p>\n
\"We have not received a reprimand from KONI. If we do, we will
\nstudy it to find out whether we should clarify this matter or we
\njust accept their argument,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wahyuni was cleared from a doping charge on Wednesday in the
\nSEA Games Federation Executive Committee meeting and could retain
\nher gold medal. However, the committee members decided that KONI
\nshould reprimand the team manager and officials for failing to
\ninform their athletes of the doping regulation. KONI was also
\nadvised to warn Wahyuni to avoid a similar case.<\/p>\n
However, Oyong avoided blaming KONI, his officials and Wahyuni
\nfor the doping charge.<\/p>\n
\"We have learned a good lesson from this case. We should put
\nmore attention on our fighters' daily lives to avoid doping
\ncharges in regional and international tournaments,\" he said,
\nadding that a fighter should refuse certain drugs and alcoholic
