Regional governments, PHRI to rate hotels<\/p>\n

The central government has issued a new decree which transfers
\nits decades long authority to assess and rate hotels to regional
\ngovernments and the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association
\n(PHRI).<\/p>\n
R. Sarwono, deputy for Tourism Development at the Ministry of
\nTourism and Culture said that in the past, approval for hotel
\nclassification had been the sole authority of the central
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
Under the new decree, hotel classification or rating would be
\njointly issued by regional governments and PHRI.<\/p>\n
\"PHRI will issue certificates which will be approved by the
\ngovernor. PHRI and regional government would share authority,\"
\nSarwono told the Jakarta Post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The new decree will take effect next month.<\/p>\n
Representatives from hotel customers would also be involved in
\nthe assessment to maintain objectivity, Sarwono said.<\/p>\n
\"PHRI will arrange a mystery guest on the assessment,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The hotel assessment, Sarwono said, would cover basic
\nrequirements such as hotel permits, building permits and
\nsupporting facilities. It would also cover operational
\nrequirement such as services and management.<\/p>\n
Those who did not meet requirements according to their
\nclassification would be given time to complete improvements.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said that the new system would have a positive impact
\non the hotel industry as hotel managers would be forced to be
\nmore professional and responsible for their products.<\/p>\n
\"Those who can offer better services will be able to win more
\ncustomers,\" he remarked.<\/p>\n
Yanti Sukamdani Hardjoprakoso, chairwomen of PHRI said that
\nthe coming hotel assessment would focus more on services and
\nmanagement, not only the physical aspects.<\/p>\n
Yanti said that with the new system hotel classification would
\nbe better because assessments were conducted by professional
\ninstitutions.<\/p>\n
At present, hotels are classified into five rating categories:
\nfive stars, four stars, three stars, two stars and one star
\naccording to facilities and services they offer.<\/p>",
